Other products under mandatory standards

Besides the EESS Regulatory Compliance and the ACMA Regulatory Compliance, there are several other product groups under mandatory standards in Australia.

In Australia, mandatory standards are introduced when considered reasonably necessary to prevent or reduce the risk of injury to a person. If your product is subject to a mandatory standard, it must meet particular safety criteria before it can be sold in Australia.

Products under mandatory standards are e.g.:

Aquatic toys

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction and warning information for aquatic toys.

Baby bath aids

This mandatory standard applies to bath aids designed to support a baby while being bathed.

Baby dummies and dummy chains

This mandatory standard applies to dummies designed specifically for babies and dummy chains and similar products intended to attach a baby’s dummy to his/her clothing.

Baby walkers

This mandatory standard applies to baby walkers, which support the child to move around before they’ve learned to walk.

Balloon blowing kits

This mandatory standard applies to kits contain a blow-pipe and a glue-like substance used to make balloons.

Basketball rings & backboards

The mandatory standard covers requirements for safety marking and installation instructions for basketball rings and backboards.

Bean bags

This mandatory standard applies to bean bags and bean bag covers that have openings through which the filling can be accessed or can escape, and prescribes a labelling requirement for packages containing bean bag filling.

Bicycle helmets

A mandatory safety standard applies to the supply of bicycle helmets used for riding bikes and other recreational wheeled devices. The standard sets out the design, construction, performance and safety markings for bicycle helmets.

Bicycles

The mandatory standard covers design and labelling requirements for child and adult pedal bicycles.

Blinds, curtains and window fittings

This mandatory standard applies to internal blinds, curtains and some window fittings supplied after 30 December 2010.

Bunk beds

This mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for the construction, design and labelling requirements of bunk beds.

Button and coin batteries

Four mandatory standards apply to button/coin batteries reduce the risk of death and injury associated with the use of button and coin batteries.

Care labelling for clothing and textiles

This mandatory standard was updated on 5 September 2023 and specifies the labelling requirements for clothing and textile products.

Child restraints for use in motor vehicles

The mandatory standard for child restraints covers various requirements for the design, construction, performance, user instructions, marking and packaging of child car restraints.

Cosmetics ingredients labelling

The mandatory information standard prescribes requirements for the labelling of cosmetic products.

Decorative alcohol fuelled devices

Decorative alcohol fuelled devices are designed for domestic use and produce a flame using alcohol as fuel. The devices are primarily used for decoration although larger models also may provide heating.

Disposable cigarette lighters

The mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for child resistance, labelling and testing and performance of disposable lighters.

Elastic luggage straps

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the safety markings and labelling requirements of elastic luggage straps.

Exercise cycles

The mandatory standard for exercise cycles prescribes requirements for construction and design. It also mandates instructions for use of the exercise cycle.

Folding cots

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design and construction, performance and safety labelling for folding cots.

Hot water bottles

The mandatory standard for hot water bottles prescribes requirements for the design and construction, performance and labelling.

Household cots

This mandatory standard applies to household cots that are new, second-hand, antique, and collectable.

Miniature motorbikes

The mandatory standard was introduced on 18 December 2019 and prescribes requirements for the design, construction and performance of miniature motorbikes, as well as accompanying safety warnings and user manual.

Moveable soccer goals

The mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for the construction, testing and labelling of moveable soccer goals supplied after 31 December 2010.

Nightwear for children

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for safety testing and labelling of children’s nightwear and paper patterns for making children’s nightwear.

Non-refillable helium cylinders

The mandatory standard applies to non-refillable helium cylinders supplied in Australia. The mandatory standard does not apply to refillable helium cylinders. 

Portable aerosol fire extinguishers

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction, labelling and performance of portable aerosol fire extinguishers.

Portable non-aerosol fire extinguishers

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for cylinder construction, performance testing and identification colours for fire extinguishers.

Portable ramps for vehicles

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction, performance and labelling of portable ramps for vehicles with a nominated capacity of up to and including 1,500 kilograms.

Portable swimming pools

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the labelling of portable swimming pools.

Prams & strollers

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the performance testing, design, construction, safety warnings and labels of prams and strollers.

Projectile toys

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction and labelling of projectile toys.

Quad bikes

This safety standard applies to all quad bikes from 11 October 2020 with additional requirements for general use quad bikes from 11 October 2021. The standard does not apply to second-hand quad bikes other than those imported into Australia.

Recovery straps for motor vehicles

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the information that must be provided on the packaging, on a label on the strap, a warning and instructions for safe use.

Reduced Fire Risk Cigarettes

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the performance, packaging and marking requirements of reduced fire risk cigarettes.

Self-balancing scooters

This mandatory safety standard applies to self-balancing scooters.

Sunglasses & fashion spectacles

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for lens categories, construction and labelling of sunglasses and fashion spectacles.

Swimming & flotation aids

The mandatory standard prescribes marking, design and construction, and performance requirements for swimming and flotation aids.

Tobacco health warnings

The mandatory standard prescribes the labelling, including explanatory, information, warning messages and graphics and their rotation, for tobacco products.

Toys containing lead & other elements

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the levels of various chemicals that can be found in children’s toys and finger paints and their testing.

Toys containing magnets

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the testing, warning labels for packaging, and instructions to prevent serious illness that can result if children swallow hazardous magnets.

Toys for children up to and including 36 months of age

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design and construction of toys for children up to and including 36 months of age.

Treadmills

The mandatory standard prescribes labelling requirements for treadmills.

Trolley jacks

The mandatory standard applies to hydraulic trolley jacks designed to raise a part of a vehicle via the vehicle’s chassis.

Vehicle jacks

The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the design, construction, performance and provision of instructions for vehicle jacks.

Vehicle support stands

The mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for the design, construction, safety marking, and packaging requirements of vehicle support stands.
