China - RoHS 2

China RoHS, officially known as the Administrative Measures on the Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products (China RoHS2), is a comprehensive set of regulations implemented by the Chinese government. Introduced on July 1, 2019, China RoHS2 represents a significant update to the original China RoHS regulations initiated in 2006. The primary objective of these regulations is to limit the usage of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products, aligning with global initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and electronic waste management.

China RoHS2 applies to a wide range of electrical and electronic products, encompassing items such as information technology equipment, audio and video equipment, lighting equipment, household appliances, electronic components, and more. The regulations place restrictions on the presence of specific hazardous substances in these products, including lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

A key aspect of China RoHS2 is the requirement for manufacturers to comply with substance limits and, if necessary, undergo third-party testing to ensure adherence to these restrictions. The regulations also necessitate the implementation of a conformity assessment system, enabling authorities to verify that products entering the Chinese market meet environmental standards.

One distinctive feature of China RoHS2 is the mandatory marking requirement for covered products. Items subject to the regulations must display a China RoHS conformity mark, providing consumers, recyclers, and regulatory authorities with information about the product’s compliance with substance restrictions. The mark includes details such as the environmental protection use period, the Green Product Certification label, and other relevant information.

Manufacturers operating under China RoHS2 are also required to establish and maintain technical documentation demonstrating their products’ compliance. This documentation includes information related to substance content, test reports, and conformity assessment procedures. Keeping thorough records is essential for demonstrating ongoing compliance with the regulations.

China RoHS2 encourages continuous improvement in environmental performance by urging manufacturers to adopt eco-friendly design and manufacturing practices. By promoting transparency, the regulations enable consumers and stakeholders to make informed decisions about the handling and disposal of electronic products.

In essence, China RoHS2 represents a strategic move by China to enhance environmental protection measures in the electronics industry. By restricting the use of hazardous substances, promoting responsible manufacturing practices, and encouraging transparency, China RoHS2 contributes to the global goal of sustainable and environmentally conscious electronic product management. Compliance with these regulations is imperative for manufacturers looking to enter or maintain a presence in the Chinese market, ensuring alignment with environmental standards and meeting the expectations of environmentally conscious consumers.
