India: New regulation for textile labelling 

 

India has published a new regulation for textile products: Regulation on (Labelling and Marking’s for Textiles Apparels and Made-Up Articles), 2025. 

The objective of this regulation is to strengthen consumer awareness and safeguard consumer interests by ensuring the availability of accurate information on fibre composition and country of origin. It aims to prevent inaccurate or misleading product claims through mandatory disclosure and clear display of essential product information. 

In accordance with the regulation: 

Every apparel or made-up articles shall bear a durable and legible label indicating fibre composition, country of origin and manufacturer details asper latest version of lS 14452 and lS 15798 (Part 2). 

 (a) Mandatory Core lnformation  

The label must clearly and accurately identify: 

(i) The fibre composition 

(ii) Country of Origin and  

(iii) Manufacturer/Buyer details in case of manufactured in lndia, lmporter / Buyer details as applicable.  

(b) Traceability lnformation  

Every label shall bear the details of the manufacturer, lmporter, Buyer,Retaileror any other entity in the form of bar code / QR Code and the like or any other suitable means sufficient enough to enable the traceability of textile articles covered under this regulation.  

(c) Safety and Hazard Communication 

Apparels made ups which need special safety measures to protect the user from harm. The label must contain suitable instruction(s) on safe usage by mentioning warning and cautionary statement. 

In the European Union and other developed economies, the disclosure and display of country of origin, fibre composition, and wash and care instructions are mandatory labelling requirements. As India aspires to become a developed nation, implementing a mandatory labelling and marking regulation for readymade garments and made-ups represents a fundamental step toward improving product quality, protecting consumer interests, and enhancing transparency in the marketplace. Such a regulation will also contribute to the overall welfare of citizens by promoting informed purchasing decisions and supporting higher standards of living.
