Canada: Updated energy efficiency standards for residential, commercial and industrial products
Canada has published Regulations Amending the Energy Efficiency Regulations, 2016.
The Energy Efficiency Regulations, 2016 (the Regulations) prescribe energy efficiency and testing standards for residential, commercial and industrial energy-using products. They also prescribe labelling requirements for certain products to disclose and compare the energy use of a given product model relative to others in their category. The Regulations are amended regularly to introduce or update energy efficiency and testing standards.
This proposed amendment (Amendment 19) would:
- Introduce new products into the Regulations with associated requirements for energy efficiency standards, testing standards, verification, labelling, and provision of information;
- Expand the scope, introduce, or update energy efficiency and testing standards of some currently regulated products;
- Allow regulated parties to voluntarily comply with the new requirements earlier by including an early compliance option; and
- Support trade, regulatory implementation and burden reduction through actions like grouping similar products by function and withdrawing outdated standards.

- Computer room air conditioners (HS: 8415.82, 8415.10);
- Clothes dryers (HS: 8451.21);
- Pool heaters (HS: 8516.10, 8418.61, 8419.11, 8419.19, 8516.79);
- Pool pump motors (HS: 8501.40, 8501.51, 8501.52);
- Battery chargers (HS: 8504.40);
- Clothes washers (HS: 8450.11, 8450.12, 8450.20);
- Dishwashers (HS: 8422.11);
- Electric motors (HS: 8501.40, 8501.52, 8501.53);
- Electric ranges (HS: 8516.60);
- Freezers (HS: 8418.30, 8418.40);
- Gas-fired instantaneous water heaters (HS: 8419.11);
- Gas-fired storage water heaters (HS: 8419.19);
- Gas furnaces (HS: 7322.90);
- Gas ranges (HS: 7321.11);
- Ground-source heat pumps (HS: 8418.61, 8415.81);
- Integrated clothes washer-dryers (HS: 8450.11, 8450.12, 8450.19, 8450.20);
