India: Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) postponed

Inda has published a Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Amendment Order, 2025, through which it postpones indefinitely its new certification for machinery and electronic equipment.

A day after the government simultaneously withdrew 14 quality control orders (QCOs) covering primarily imported petrochemicals and industrial raw materials, it has now removed the implementation date for another major regulation—the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024.

Under the original timeline, the affected products would have required BIS Scheme X certification before being allowed for import and sale in India. However, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has issued a new amendment eliminating the previously set implementation date of 1 September 2026, effectively pausing India’s ongoing efforts to tighten technical standards across multiple sectors, according to a government notification released on Friday.

The Second Amendment Order, 2025—issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016—revises the provision to state that the regulation will take effect “from such date as may be notified by the Central government in the official gazette,” the ministry said.

This latest change leaves the rollout without a definite timeline, creating added uncertainty for manufacturers and importers who had been preparing for mandatory compliance.
