EU: New EN standards for machinery
The EU Commission has published a new implementing decision establishing new EN standards for machinery.
EN standards (Europe-wide technical norms) are developed by recognized standardization bodies such as CEN and CENELEC. When these harmonised standards are published in the Official Journal of the EU, manufacturers who follow them gain a presumption of conformity with the regulation’s essential health and safety requirements. That means applying these standards can simplify regulatory compliance and support CE marking.
Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, the essential health and safety requirements are outlined in Annex III. If machinery or machinery-related products comply with relevant, harmonised EN standards (or parts of them), a presumption of conformity with these essential requirements applies.
The Commission formally requests CEN/CENELEC (or other ESOs) to draft these harmonised standards.
