EU: New EN standards for machinery

 

The EU Commission has published a new implementing decision establishing new EN standards for machinery.

EN standards (Europe-wide technical norms) are developed by recognized standardization bodies such as CEN and CENELEC. When these harmonised standards are published in the Official Journal of the EU, manufacturers who follow them gain a presumption of conformity with the regulation’s essential health and safety requirements. That means applying these standards can simplify regulatory compliance and support CE marking.

Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, the essential health and safety requirements are outlined in Annex III. If machinery or machinery-related products comply with relevant, harmonised EN standards (or parts of them), a presumption of conformity with these essential requirements applies.

The Commission formally requests CEN/CENELEC (or other ESOs) to draft these harmonised standards.

The newly announced standards are:

Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts – Lifts for the transport of goods only – Part 31: Accessible goods only lifts’;
EN 81-41:2024
Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts – Special lifts for the transport of persons and goods – Part 41: Vertical lifting platforms intended for use by persons with impaired mobility’;
EN 81-44:2024
Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts – Special lifts for the transport of persons and goods – Part 44: Lifting appliances in wind turbines’;
EN 1846-2:2024
Firefighting and rescue service vehicles – Part 2: Common requirements – Safety and performance’;

Application equipment for coating materials – Safety requirements’;
EN 12077-2:2024
Cranes safety – Requirements for health and safety – Part 2: Limiting and indicating devices’;
