Mexico: New NOM standard for steel products
Mexico has published a Draft Mexican Official Standard PROY-NOM-251-SE-2025, Construction industry – Iron and steel products – Specifications, test methods and commercial information (which cancels the previous one PROY-NOM-251-SE-2021).
The draft Mexican Official Standard establishes the specifications, test methods, commercial information and conformity assessment procedure applicable to iron and steel construction products manufactured, imported and/or marketed in the national territory, in order to guarantee the safety of users of these products.
It applies to iron and steel products manufactured, imported and/or marketed in the national territory, listed in Table 1 of its Chapter 4, intended for construction sites and construction sites. This draft Mexican Official Standard does not apply to steel products used in construction sites and construction sites that are not listed in Table 1.
The standard defines further Mexican standards (NOM or NMX) for specific product groups.
Moreover, it defines labeling requirements:
Products subject to this Draft Mexican Official Standard must display a legible label and/or identification in Spanish, which must contain truthful information and not mislead the consumer with respect to the nature and characteristics of the product.
Products subject to this Draft Mexican Official Standard must contain on their labels the information specified in the corresponding Mexican product Standard or those that replace them, in addition to the following minimum requirements:
a) Name or generic name of the product.
b) Name, denomination, brand or company name of the producer or importer.
c) Official password in accordance with NOM-106-SCFI-2017, see section 2.1, when the Conformity Assessment of this Standard is complied with.
