EU: Update of the EU Short-Range Device Desision
The EU has published a draft decision amending requirements for short-range devices:
Draft Commission Implementing Decision amending Commission Decision 2006/771/EC updating harmonised technical conditions in the area of radio spectrum use for short-range devices and repealing Commission Decision 2014/641/EU on harmonised technical conditions of radio spectrum use by wireless audio programme making and special events equipment in the Union.
This draft Commission Implementing Decision mandates EU Member States to designate and make available specific frequency bands for several categories of short-range devices (SRD) on a non-exclusive, non-interference, and non-protected basis, in accordance with the technical conditions specified in the technical annex.
This draft Decision will amend the Short-Range Devices Decision (Decision 2006/771/EC, as last amended by Decision (EU) 2022/180) by updating the technical annex to reflect technological advancements and societal needs, leading to new short-range devices and applications. Additionally, it is possible to consolidate other existing Decisions related to the spectrum use by short-range devices, such as wireless audio PMSE devices, into the general SRD Decision 2006/771/EC.
The update includes new frequency range entries: 76-77 GHz for High-Definition Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radars (HD-GBSAR), and 69.8-79.9 GHz and 76.5-80.5 GHz for security scanners. A new category, “Audio PMSE devices,” has been created with entries in the 800 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands. As a result, Decision 2014/641/EU on harmonized technical conditions for radio spectrum use by wireless audio program-making and special events equipment in the Union can be repealed.
The proposed date of adoption of the amended decision is January 2025.
