EU: Update of the regulation for construction products
The EU has published Proposal for a Regulation laying down harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products. It is amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and repealing Regulation (EU) 305/2011.
The proposal will improve the smooth functioning of the single market of construction products and will make the standardisation process more effective and efficient. In line with the Circular Economy Action Plan, the draft regulation will address the environmental sustainability and safety of construction products and contribute to reducing the overall climate and environmental impact of construction products, including through the application of digital tools (Digital Product Passport).
The proposed date of adoption is the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2024.
Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, concerning market surveillance and compliance of construction products, is a pivotal piece of legislation within the European Union aimed at ensuring the safety and performance of construction materials and products placed on the market. Adopted in July 2019, the regulation is designed to strengthen market surveillance mechanisms and enhance the harmonization of construction product standards across EU member states.
The primary objective of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 is to establish a robust framework for market surveillance activities to verify that construction products comply with the declared performance characteristics and meet the essential requirements set out in relevant harmonized standards. This contributes to the overall safety and quality of buildings and infrastructure throughout the EU.
