Taiwan: New regulation for drones
Taiwan published a Proposal for Legal Inspection Requirements for Drones (less than 2 kilograms in weight). The regulation would make them subject to the Taiwanese BSMI conformity assessment system. Especially those light drones would be affected which are equipped with cameras, positioning and navigation systems or connection ports.
Nowadays, drones are frequently used for multiple purposes, for examples, photography and light shows. In order to enhance consumer safety, the BSMI proposes to add drones (less than 2 kilograms in weight) into the scope of legal inspection. Two alternative conformity assessment procedures are made available for the choice of applicants, i.e. Registration of Product Certification (RPC) or Type-Approved Batch Inspection (TABI).
Standards prescribed for drones are:
- CNS 15598-1: 2020
- CNS 15936: 2016
- CISPR 35: 2016
BSMI, which stands for the Bureau of Standards, Metrology, and Inspection, operates under Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs. In Taiwan, governmental regulations are established to ensure that products available within the Taiwanese market adhere to safety, health, and environmental standards, as well as meet specific technical requirements for certain product categories. The primary intent behind enacting these regulations is to safeguard consumer interests and foster sustainable economic growth.
The certification of conformity issued by BSMI is obligatory for a selection of imported and commercial products within the Taiwanese market.
Various products are in scope of the BSMI, including Garments, Tires, Building materials, Protective gear, Electronic products, Products for children, Products from plastic, Chemical products, Motorcycles, etc.
Soon, light drones may be added to this scope. The inspection for them, no matter imported and domestically produced, is supposed to begin from 1 July 2023.
