Japan: Update of standards for electrical appliances and materials

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced an updated list of technical requirements and standards for electrical appliances and materials.

Parts of the document “About interpretation of ministerial ordinance for establishing technical requirements for electrical appliances and materials” were revised on 1 April 2022.

The two updated standards are:

  • JIS C 9335-2-5: 2021 Safety of household and similar electrical equipment-Part 2-5: Individual requirements for electric dishwashers
  • JIS C 9335-2-10: 2021 Safety of household and similar electrical equipment-Part 2-10: Individual requirements for floor treatment machines and wet washing brush machines

The products affected by the standards (among many other electrical household appliances) are in scope of the so called DENAN Act (Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act) of Japan. As a result, they are subject to the PSE Certification for which the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is the responsible authority.
